Itinerary

Palccoyo Tour

We will begin our Palccoyo Tour early in the morning, departing from Cusco city at dawn. Our journey will take us through the stunning Andean landscapes of the South Valley.

As we ascend through the scenic landscapes of the Cusco region, the winding roads will offer incredible views of valleys, traditional farming terraces, and snow-capped peaks.

Along the way, we will see herds of alpacas and llamas grazing in the high-altitude meadows. As we gain altitude, we will feel the crisp mountain air and appreciate the untouched beauty of the Andean highlands.

We will reach Palccoyo, located at approximately 4,900 meters above sea level, where our adventure will begin. Unlike the famous Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca, this trek follows a gentle path with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for all travelers. The hike will take around one hour, offering spectacular views of the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountains in Peru. As we climb higher, the landscape reveals vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow colors sculpted over centuries by mineral deposits and geological forces.

Once we reach the top, we will marvel at the panoramic view of the surrounding mountain range. We will also visit the Stone Forest, a unique geological formation created by centuries of erosion, featuring towering rock formations resembling stone spires. Our guide will explain the history and cultural significance of this sacred Andean region. If the sky remains clear, we will see Ausangate Mountain, the highest peak in the region at 6,384 meters, standing majestically in the distance.

After taking in the incredible scenery, we will descend slowly and return to our vehicle. The drive back will allow us to reflect on our experiences.

Day  Statistics:
  • Distance traveled: Approximately 200 k round trip
  • Highest altitude: 4,900 meters above sea level
  • Lowest altitude: Cusco at 3,399 meters above sea level
  • Hiking distance: Around 2 km with a gradual elevation gain

How difficult is the Palccoyo Tour?

The hike is easy to moderate, with a short and gradual trail that makes it accessible for all fitness levels. It is much easier than the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain Trek. It is an excellent choice for families and those looking for a relaxed adventure.

The route does not require a high level of endurance, but moderate physical condition is ideal. Walking at a steady pace will allow us to fully enjoy the scenic beauty without exertion.

How long does the hike take?

The hike to Palccoyo Cusco takes approximately one hour round trip, making it ideal for those who prefer shorter treks. The relatively flat trail ensures that we can walk comfortably while taking in the views.

We will have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and explore key viewpoints. Unlike other high-altitude treks, this experience allows us to appreciate nature without a demanding climb.

What is the highest altitude of the tour?

The highest point of the tour is 4,900 meters above sea level, meaning altitude acclimatization is highly recommended. Spending at least one or two days in Cusco before the tour will help our bodies adjust.

While the trail itself is not steep, the high elevation may cause mild discomfort for some travelers. Staying hydrated and walking at a steady pace will help reduce any altitude-related symptoms.

What is the best time to visit Palccoyo?

The dry season (May to September) is the best time to visit Palccoyo Cusco due to its clear skies and vibrant colors. During this period, the landscape appears more striking, with brilliant hues of red, orange, and yellow.

The rainy season is from October to April. It can still provide beautiful views, but there may be cloudy conditions and muddy trails. Early morning visits offer the best lighting and the fewest crowds.

Is there a risk of altitude sickness?

Since Palccoyo is at a high altitude, some travelers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness. Common symptoms include headaches, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

Drinking plenty of water, moving slowly, and eating light meals before the hike can help minimize discomfort. Carrying coca leaves for altitude sickness medication can also be beneficial. If symptoms become severe, our guide will have oxygen available for support.

What should we bring for the tour?

We should wear comfortable and warm clothing since temperatures can drop significantly at high elevations. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential to protect against strong UV rays.

Bringing a refillable water bottle is crucial to staying hydrated throughout the journey. A camera or smartphone will allow us to capture the breathtaking landscapes of the Rainbow Mountains in Peru.
