Itinerary

Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley Tour

We will start our day early, departing from Cusco. The drive to the starting point will take around 2:30 hours. During this scenic journey, we will pass through the town of Cusipata. Along the way, we will enjoy views of the high Andean mountain range.

We will stop in the town of Cusipata for a well-deserved breakfast before continuing to the trailhead. A warm meal will help us prepare for the high-altitude trek ahead.

After arriving at the trailhead, our tour guide will give a brief overview of the route and provide safety tips for high-altitude hiking. If needed, we will offer oxygen tanks to ensure your comfort during the hike.

We will begin the hike toward Rainbow Mountain. The trail to the top of the mountain will take around 1:30 to 2 hours, depending on the group’s pace. We will walk steadily, allowing time for rest and acclimatization.

The terrain is mostly uphill, with some rocky sections, but we will move at a comfortable pace. We will stop along the way to catch our breath and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

We will reach the summit at 5,036 meters and enjoy the magnificent view of Rainbow Mountain.

The mountain’s colorful stripes stand out against the snowy peaks of the Andes.

We will have time to take photos, enjoy the scenery, and learn about the geological history of the area.

At this point, we may feel the effects of the altitude, but we will take breaks and stay safe. Our guides will be available to answer any questions and provide assistance if required.

After taking in the views, we will start our descent. During the descent, we will enjoy different perspectives of the landscape and the surrounding mountains.

After a short break, we will head to the nearby Red Valley. Travelers admire the Red Valley for its unique, reddish-toned hills and dramatic landscapes. We will enjoy a more relaxed walk through the valley, with easier terrain compared to the Rainbow Mountain tour.

We will stroll through the valley, taking in the impressive surroundings and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

We will explore the Red Valley at a slow pace, stopping at scenic viewpoints to capture the beauty of the landscape. The surreal red hues of the valley create a striking contrast with the blue sky and nearby mountains. Our guide will share interesting facts about the natural and cultural significance of the valley.

As we walk, we may encounter local wildlife, including birds and Andean animals. The Red Valley is peaceful and quiet, helping us feel closer to nature in a different way than Rainbow Mountain.

After exploring the Red Valley, we will drive back to Cusipata for a well-deserved lunch. A delicious buffet-style meal will await us, featuring local Andean cuisine.

Then we will begin our return journey to Cusco. The drive will take about 2:30 hours. We will travel back along the same scenic route, reflecting on the incredible landscapes we’ve seen throughout the day trip.

We will arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon, concluding our full-day tour. After a day filled with breathtaking views, you will have memories of one of the most remarkable landscapes in Peru.

How difficult is the hike to Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley?

The hike is moderate to challenging because of the high altitude and steep inclines. The trail to Rainbow Mountain takes around 1:30 to 2 hours and requires a steady pace. The trek to Red Valley is slightly easier, with rolling hills and a more gradual descent. We will take breaks along the way to adjust to the altitude and enjoy the scenery.

What is the highest altitude reached during the tour?

The highest point of the trail is 5,045 meters above sea level, in the Red Valley. The hike begins at 4,300 meters, which means we’ll climb almost 900 meters. Since we’re hiking at high altitude, we recommend walking slowly and drinking plenty of water.

Will altitude sickness be a problem?

Altitude sickness can affect some travelers, especially those not accustomed to high elevations. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. We provide oxygen tanks and a first aid kit to assist in case of discomfort. We should spend at least two days in Cusco to get used to the altitude, drink plenty of water, and eat light before the hike.

Can I rent a horse if I have trouble hiking?

Yes, horses are available for rent along the trail for 90 soles per person (optional). Horses can help cover most of the ascent, making the hike less strenuous. However, we must walk the last 200 to 300 meters  to the summit because of the steep incline.

Hiring a horse is a great option for those who want to experience the journey without getting too tired

What should I wear for the tour?

The weather at high altitudes can change rapidly, so wearing layered clothing is essential. A warm jacket, gloves, and a hat will help protect against the cold.

We recommend bringing a rain jacket or poncho, especially during the rainy season (November to March).

Sturdy trekking shoes are a must, as the terrain can be rocky and uneven. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap will protect against strong UV rays.
