Itinerary

Huchuy Qosqo Day Trip

CUSCO – QENQO

We will leave Cusco early in the morning and drive toward Qenqo, the starting point of our adventure. As we ascend, the road will offer breathtaking views of the Andes of Cusco. We will arrive at Qenqo and prepare for our Huchuy Qosqo trek.

Following an ancient Inca trail, we will begin our gradual ascent through high-altitude grasslands and rocky paths. The fresh mountain air and the sound of the wind rushing through the valleys will accompany us as we climb higher. The route will take us through hidden lagoons, small canyons, and remnants of Inca stone pathways. Testament of the advanced engineering of the Inca civilization.

As we continue, we will reach the highest point of the day at 4,350 meters above sea level. From here, we will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Urubamba Mountain Range standing majestically against the sky.

The landscape will shift from grassy highlands to rugged Andean terrain, showcasing the diverse beauty of the Peruvian Andes. This moment will offer an opportunity to rest, take photos, and appreciate nature. Then we’ll continue our descent toward Huchuy Qosqo.

HUCHUY QOSQO

We will descend from the mountain pass, following a winding trail that leads us toward the Huchuy Qosqo Ruins. As we make our way down, the landscape will shift from rocky terrain to terraced slopes, revealing breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley below.

Along the way, we may spot wild llamas, alpacas and andean wildlife. In the sky condors soaring above, and small clusters of native vegetation that thrive in this high-altitude environment. The final stretch of the descent will take us through narrow pathways and ancient staircases.

Upon arriving at Huchuy Qosqo 3,600 meters above sea level,  expansive views of the Valley welcome us. A portrait of lush agricultural fields, winding rivers, and distant mountain peaks. This impressive Inca site was built in the 15th century as a royal estate for Inca Viracocha. He was one of the most influential rulers of the empire.

Our guide will share the fascinating history of this administrative center. Additionally, he will explain its immense significance as a strategic site overlooking the Sacred Valley. Despite its remote location, Huchuy Qosqo played a crucial role in the region’s agricultural and political systems.

We will take our time exploring the main plaza, where Inca rulers once gathered for ceremonies and administrative decisions. The tour will pass through ceremonial halls, expertly crafted stone structures, and a functioning ancient irrigation system. The site’s well-preserved agricultural terraces showcase the advanced engineering techniques of the Incas. These structures efficiently maximize the production of staples like corn and potatoes.

Much of its original architecture and layout remain intact. This visit will offer us a glimpse into the ingenuity and resilience of the Inca civilization, as well as an unforgettable perspective of the Sacred Valley’s natural and historical beauty.

RETURN TO CUSCO

After exploring Huchuy Qosqo, we will begin our descent toward the town of Lamay at 2,900 meters above sea level. The trail will lead us through steep switchbacks and scenic farmland, offering incredible views of the Valley. We may see llamas, alpacas, and traditional Andean homes along the way.

Upon reaching Lamay, we will enjoy some free time before our private transport takes us back to Cusco. The return drive will take approximately one hour and 30 minutes, ending our incredible day tour.

How difficult is the Huchuy Qosqo trek?

The trek is moderate to challenging, with steep ascents, rocky paths, and uneven terrain. We will hike at high altitude, reaching 4,350 meters at the highest point. The thin air can make the climb more demanding.

We recommend maintaining a good fitness level and properly acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the journey. The descent is easier but requires careful footing on narrow trails.

Can altitude sickness be a problem?

Yes, some hikers may experience altitude sickness due to the high elevation. We recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before the trek to properly acclimatize. Staying hydrated, avoiding heavy meals, and walking at a steady, relaxed pace can help reduce symptoms.

If needed, coca tea or altitude sickness medication may provide relief. Before the trip, consulting your doctor about altitude sickness prevention and medication is highly recommended.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season (May–September) offers clear skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility, making it ideal for trekking. The rainy season (November–March) transforms the landscape with lush greenery, blooming wildflowers, and fewer tourists. This season creates a serene and picturesque atmosphere, though the trails may become muddy and more challenging.

Great Alternative to Machu Picchu!
This was the best part of our trip! Unlike Machu Picchu, Huchuy Qosqo felt remote and untouched. The trek through the Peruvian Andes was amazing, and the ruins were well-preserved.
We saw llamas along the way and had incredible views of the Valley. Our tour operator was excellent. Highly recommended!
